The Low-Voltage Prewire Checklist for New Construction

January 20, 20269 min read

The single most common regret we hear from homeowners after a custom build: 'I wish we'd run more wire.' Prewire is cheap while walls are open and expensive after they're closed. This checklist is a starting point to bring to your builder before framing inspection.

Before framing closes

  • Multiple Ethernet runs to every TV and likely access point location
  • Speaker wire to all planned in-ceiling and in-wall speaker locations
  • Conduit from the equipment closet to the attic and basement for future pulls
  • Wiring at every keypad, thermostat, and control location appropriate to the chosen platform
  • Dedicated power circuits at the equipment rack location

Equipment location

Plan a real, dedicated space for your equipment — not a closet under the stairs. It should have active ventilation, dedicated power, and enough room to service equipment without unloading it.

Outdoor and garage

  • Cable to every camera and outdoor TV location
  • Speaker wire to patios, pergolas, and pool areas in conduit
  • Ethernet runs to the garage for door openers, EV chargers, and any future equipment
  • Weatherproof power outlets at any covered outdoor entertainment area

Get this on the plans

The best results come from involving your AV designer early — during design development — so low-voltage drawings can be redlined onto the architectural plans before the trades arrive on site.
